Heritage Listed 1860's Gasworks Building

Nestled on the banks of the River Angas we have 3 beautiful accommodations to chose from all set in over an acre of landscaped gardens, filled with roses and fruit trees. The main building was built in the 1860's to produce gas from coal, it closed down 1917 and fell into disrepair, over 20 years ago it was repurposed as a Art Gallery then a restaurant and finally a bed and breakfast with 3 self contained cottages.

The Managers cottage sleeps 5 is the original accommodation for the Manager and his family to live on site maintaining the production of gas, a fully self contained cottage with 2 queen beds, 1 queen bed is in open plan lounge area and the other a four poster occupies its own room and has access to spa bathroom via its own door there is also sofa bed in lounge area if needed.

The Stables Cottage sleeps 2 was the original stables and has been extended in recent years to become a charming cottage with living room/kitchen, queen bedded room with ensuite spa.

Finally the Garden suite sleeps 4 is in a wing off the main building, it was once the commercial kitchen area of the restaurant and is now reborn as a modern and comfortable suite with living area, kitchen, bedroom with queen bed leading to ensuite shower room, laundry area (an extra double bed is also located in the large living room but take note it does share the ensuite bathroom).

Gasworks bluestone building has been beautifully converted to a private residence with its original lovingly restored (2 bedded plus sofa bed) historic Managers Cottage, available for short stays and holidays for groups, or couples, period features abound, with modern reverse cycle heating/cooling plus a working fireplace (please note there is fee payable direct for firewood and cleaning), TV with built-in DVD player, large bathroom complete with spa make you feel as if you've stepped back into the past but with none of the downsides.

For Couples, we can close off one of the Manager Cottage bedrooms to make a more cosy option or alternatively you can book the romantic 1 queen bedded Stables Cottage, also with own Spa bath with shower over, tv with built-in DVD player and reverse cycle heating and cooling.

A third option is our more modern Garden Suite, with beautiful views across the gardens down to the river, this cottage has a Queen bedded room with large walk in with safety rails ensuite shower and toilet (laundry facilities washer and dryer are also available for use in this large room).

This Suite also has a double bed in the living room ideal for children or close relatives as the ensuite in the bedroom would have to be shared. The Garden suite also is fully carpeted, reverse cycle heating and cooling and has a large screen TV.

All three cottages have access to free wifi are completely self-contained with own kitchens and living areas. The property is set in over an acre of cared for gardens and situated right on the banks of the River Angas. We are less than 500m from the nearest restaurant and under 1 kilometre from the town centre with its pubs, shops and cafes.

500m to Kilometre you will find River walks and parklands, the town centre with its many cafes, pubs and shopping, town swimming outdoor pools, Heritage Centre and Tourist information centre.

15 mins away by car the Oasis Gardens ideal for lunches or an evening meal, just a little further away you will come to the Langhorne Creek winery region, many wonderful vineyards, Bremerton, Lake Breeze, and Bleasdale (we provide complementary port from Bleasdale in all our accommodation) to name just a few, they provide wine tasting, platters and lunch options.

Further afield in approx 30 mins, you can visit the coastline, the nearest beach is Goolwa with Port Elliot and Middleton a little further or in 40 mins you can reach Victor Harbour and maybe see a Whale or Dolphin.

In Strathalbyn, we also have a historic steam railway and certain times of year a train runs to nearby (20mins) Mount Barker and the coastline.
In 45 mins from Strathalbyn, you can also get to Adelaide City and all its attractions and beaches as well as easy access to the Airport for those flying in.
